Engineering Student's Determination Earns Continued Scholarship Support

Pursuing a demanding double engineering degree just became more achievable for a determined student from Wauchope.

William Harris has been awarded the Lewis Land Continuing Education Scholarship at the Hastings Education Fund's annual presentation evening, providing crucial support as he enters his second year of university.

The Lewis Land Continuing Education Scholarship supports university students beyond their first year through to degree completion.

William is currently enrolled in a double degree program in Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle.

"I've always been fascinated by how things work, particularly in electronics and aviation.” William explained. “My double engineering degree is challenging, but it's allowing me to explore my passion and career aspirations in the aviation industry.”

Lewis Land’s Marketing Executive Meg Tubman and Senior Development Manager Trent Kelly interviewed this year's scholarship applicants and were impressed by William's resilience and commitment to his studies.

"William demonstrated remarkable determination throughout his first year, navigating personal hardships while maintaining his focus on completing a rigorous engineering program," Mr Kelly said. "We're proud to support students like William who show such dedication to their education and future career goals."

The scholarship will provide $5,000 annually for the duration of William's Engineering degree, helping cover essential expenses.

“I'm deeply grateful to Lewis Land and the Hastings Education Fund for believing in me and investing in my future—it's genuine encouragement that motivates me to work even harder toward my goals.” shared William.

William is among three university students currently receiving the Lewis Land Continuing Education Scholarship, coordinated by the Hastings Education Fund which has been helping local students achieve their study dreams and career goals for over a decade.

“Hastings Education Fund identifies the potential that these students have to fulfil their educational aspirations and contribute to the community.  Recipients, like William, are identified and supported during their first year and they are invited to apply for further support for the remainder of their program, which ensures that the recipients can focus on their study full-time through their degree” shared Julie McLeod, Hastings Education Fund committee member.

The Lewis Land's ongoing partnership with the Hastings Education Fund reflects a commitment to nurturing local talent and ensuring that financial barriers don't prevent capable students from reaching their full potential. For William, this support means more than just financial assistance—it's an investment in his future and a vote of confidence from his community as he works toward becoming an aviation engineer.
